Rockwall was originally inhabited by the Caddo Indians. It was first settled in 1851. While digging wells, the early settlers found numerous large underground rock walls in the area which seemed to have been man-made. However, scientists believe these underground rock walls were natural formations. When the town was established on April 17, 1854, a settler named the city after these rock walls. Rockwall became the county seat of the newly formed Rockwall County in 1873.
